Ibiza is renowned for its clubbing scene, bit it has so much more to offer than late-night (into early morning!) parties. The glorious North is our favourite part of the island as its slightly less discovered and away from the hectic crowd-filled beaches and bars of the south. Home to hippie markets, yoga retreats and beach-side sunsets, we love the bohemian spirit that this part of the island brings.
With its fascinating markets, wonderful restaurants and beautiful beaches, Ibiza never fails to impress those who visit for the first time. If you’ve never been to Ibiza, you don’t know what you’re missing.
The island is also known as the “White Island” due to the traditional limewash white walls on many of the buildings, originally used to deflect the sun’s heat in the height of summer. Ibiza has so many examples of this whitewashed architecture in its countless pretty towns and villages.
Ibiza is famous for many things, but we love the more relaxed side to the island, drumming on the beaches in the north at sunset, shopping at the eclectic markets or taking a sunrise boat over to Formentera and hanging out on the beaches there all day…
Traditional Ibizan food is a real melting pot of flavours, influenced by the many different inhabitants of the island over the years. Phoenician, Catalan, Roman and Arabic rulership have all imparted elements of their culture’s cuisine on the island, from meat curing methods to the production of wine and olive oil. You’ll find the Mediterranean classic flavours of garlic, sun-ripened tomatoes, oregano and rosemary, but they’re often blended with more exotic herbs and spices such as saffron, cinnamon, paprika and citrus.
From simple, organic fare to delicious fresh salads and awe-inspiring dishes by international chefs, there is so much to sample here. The island is humming with fabulous restaurants – chefs have migrated here from Paris, London and New York. There are many organic farms in the interior of the island ensuring that the restaurants are stocked with the very best ingredients.
Due to the high standards that have been set in recent years, the restaurants just get better and better. There are excellent Spanish staples such as gazpacho, croquetas and paella, as well as Ibizan dishes like Zarzuela de Mariscos; a seafood stew with mussels, crabs, scallops and prawns cooked in a saffron-flavoured stock.
The world is your oyster on this beautiful island. For the sea-lovers, you can hire a boat and explore the island from a different perspective, stopping off for a couple of swims in hidden coves along the way.
The beaches are to die for – the crystal-clear waters at Cala Xuclar, Benirras and Cala d’en Serra will leave you entranced. Pick your spot under the sun and set up camp for the day, cooling off every now and then with a quick dip in the sea. Once you feel suitably sun-kissed and ready to explore, there are so many markets to peruse – you could visit a new one every day! Head to Las Dalias market in San Carlos and rummage through over 200 stalls of Ibicenco trinkets and handicrafts – you’re sure to find some tie dye or macrame treasure to bring home!
Ibiza might not be the first destination to come to mind for child-friendly holidays, but it’s actually incredibly well equipped with a vast array of wonderful events for children during the summer. You can find painting projects, storytelling and craft workshops amongst many other activities. A lot of the restaurants have great creches for children too, so that the adults can enjoy an uninterrupted long, lazy lunch.
If you’re on a health kick there is yoga and Pilates a-plenty on Ibiza, and many opportunities for guided hikes through stunning scenery. As a reward for all your hard work and exercise, why not head for a luxurious spa day (there are many spas to choose from) - treat yourself to a massage before settling in on a lounger with a refreshing cold-pressed juice under the sun.
It's no secret that Ibiza is the place to be if you’re looking for nightlife and lots of it. With mega famous DJs and performers flocking to the island in the summer months, and a plethora of clubs to choose from, you’re spoilt for choice if dancing-til-dawn is what you’re after.
But we wouldn’t blame you if you just wanted to stay in the north of the island and enjoy the gentle sound of the waves lapping on moonlit beaches after a long, al fresco supper under the stars. Every Sunday evening during the summer months an eclectic cast of characters gather to dance at Benirras Beach, with drummers from around the world gathering each week to make music together as the sun goes down – it’s an authentic hippie experience and unmissable.
The joy of this island is that nothing is too far from anywhere, and you can easily get taxis back to the north of the island once you’re done with all the partying and wanting to retreat to the comfort of your villa. It’s also great if you’ve any young adults in the group who won’t be satisfied with spending the evening stargazing around the pool, as they can get taxis to and from the partying scene whilst you hunker down and enjoy a quieter evening in!
For the sunseekers, June through to August are the best times for high temperatures and almost guaranteed sunshine. The hottest months are, of course, July & August, and this is the best time of year to go for all things water sports too as the season is in full flow.
May, September and October can also be great times to visit and are popular months for health retreats on the island too, as the temperatures are slightly cooler the earlier/later in the season you go, so providing perfect conditions for hiking and outdoor yoga. In September and October, the seas are still wonderfully warm after the heat of the summer.
