There really is nowhere quite like Tuscany - verdant, rolling hills, delicious food, incredibly friendly locals and so much history and culture to explore.

This bucket-list destination is known for its picture-perfect landscapes, where towns are crammed with world-famous art and sculptured marvels, and the countryside hides little hilltop villages that look like they've stepped straight out of a fairy tale.

From medieval times through to the Renaissance and beyond, Tuscany has been a trailblazer for art and design in Europe and has been home to many prominent figures of the arts and science.

Tuscan food is known mostly for its humble roots, rustled up in the kitchens of the region’s poorest inhabitants - la cucina povera, or ‘kitchen of the poor’. The resourcefulness of the Tuscan people helped define Italian food as we know it today.

Tuscany is blessed with fertile soils and the perfect climate for growing an abundance of fruit and vegetables. The outstanding quality of produce in the region means that even the simplest of dishes are packed with flavour.

Not all of Tuscany’s dishes come from modest origins – the wealthy House of Medici, an Italian banking family that rose to great power in the 15th century had a strong influence on more indulgent fare, and it's when Chianna cattle were first introduced too. One of the area’s most renowned for is bistecca alla fiorentina, a 1kg T-bone steak, seared over hot coals and served rare with a dash of seasoning.

From stunning Renaissance artworks, delectable food, world class wines, glorious countryside and such a rich and varied history, there is just so much to see and do in Tuscany – you’re completely spoilt for choice. Daytimes here start slowly, with a strong cup of Italian coffee and a spot of people watching at your local café, before taking a walk and exploring your surroundings. Refuel with a long, lazy lunch and recover with a ‘riposo’, the Italian equivalent of a siesta, before heading out in the late evening once the heat of the day has subsided.

We’d highly recommend starting with a vineyard tour – something Italians, and particularly Tuscans, do incredibly well. There are many to choose from, and it's so easy to while away an afternoon surrounded by those romantic Tuscan vistas.

Tuscany is also home to some of the country’s most famous architectural landmarks – the leaning tower of Pisa, Florence Cathedral, the Ponte Vecchio bridge and the historical centre of Siena to name but a few! You must visit Siena and Florence whilst in the area – both real bucket list cities with so much to offer. Explore the beautiful streets, visiting the art galleries, little boutiques, and many typically Italian cafes on route.

Don’t forget though to do as the locals do and indulge in a little of the ‘dolce far niente’ (the sweetness of doing nothing) whilst in Italy – it would be rude not to!

Nights in Italy tend to be relaxed and easy going for the most part. Head for dinner in the late evening for the best ambience, as the locals tend to eat much later around 9 – 10pm when it’s a little cooler in the summer months. If you fancy a little digestivo after dinner, head out to any of the numerous little bars and venues dotted around the cities – Florence has some great spots often with live music if you fancy something more upbeat. If you’re looking for something a little more low key, head off the beaten track to a little wine bar full of locals for the perfect nightcap!

In the late Spring, the landscape of Tuscany is at its most verdant and vibrant. The daytime temperatures are just lovely, averaging in the low 20°Cs centigrade, but be sure to pack a light layer for the evenings at this time of year as it does cool off after dark.

June through to September is the peak season here, and July and August can get very hot – often in the low-to-mid 30°Cs.

August is the main holiday time for Italians, and so things can be a little busy if you’re heading to any of the more touristy locations, but it's wonderful to have such a buzz about the place with summer in full swing. You can enjoy the beaches from late May right through to October, making it the perfect short-haul getaway for school holidays.
