We have a long-standing love affair with the unspoilt beaches, rugged coastline and charming villages of Paxos...
The smallest of the Ionian islands, Paxos is a mix of sophistication and unspoilt seclusion. It is a timeless Greek island that never forgets a face - when you return (which you will!) you'll be warmly welcomed back like an old friend by many of the familiar locals!
It is quite staggering how beautiful the waters around Paxos are. You wouldn’t be forgiven for thinking you were in the Caribbean…warm seas and big sunsets make the island a fabulous destination that still hasn’t been spoiled by the influx of too many tourists.
Eating out in Paxos is easy, and we’ll give you a full list of all our favourites before you travel. The deep golden, local olive oil made from the island’s lianolia olives is truly unique. Try the calamari, bruschetta with feta and caramelised onions, seabass ‘bianco’ as well as delicious seafood risotto.
Most of the beach bars serve the freshest of fish; feast on baked sardines or grilled octopus. The homemade pastries, bread and pies in the bakeries are all mouthwatering. Nearby Italy has left a strong influence and good, fresh pasta is available in many restaurants.
The local restaurants serve both traditional Greek food and the most delicious Italian cuisine. Eating out on Paxos is a pleasure – there’s lots of choice for a small island, we think you’ll be amazed.
The best way to get to know the island is by boat – you can hire smaller boats without a licence and pootle around the coastline at your own pace. There are so many little beaches and bays to explore. If you’d prefer the reassurance of a skipper, they can take you to the best swim spots that only the locals know about. Be sure to head to nearby Anti-Paxos with its crystal-clear waters and white sandy beaches – stop for lunch here and admire the views from the wonderful clifftop taverna.
Back on dry land, there are some truly stunning walks along the old goat paths, winding through ancient olive groves. In the Spring the air is full of butterflies and the paths carpeted with wildflowers.
Spend your mornings exploring the coastline by boat, stopping for several sea dips along the way. Have a delicious lunch before heading back to shore and back to your villa for a little pre-dinner snooze by the pool…
In the height of the summer dinner gets later and later. Even the children are happily out late enjoying the freedom of cooler evenings in such a safe place. The charming squares are abuzz in the evenings with everyone catching up on the day over a delicious dinner alfresco. The tables for the tavernas spill out on to the square and the atmosphere is so wonderfully Mediterranean. You can shop late into the night as so many of the lovely little boutiques are open well into the evening – perfect for browsing on route to your table!
After supper, wander to a bar for a nightcap (or two!) at one of the pretty waterfront bars. There are even some livelier bars and a ‘club’ in Gaios too for the younger ones – it’s really gentle nightlife but plenty enough to keep them all entertained!
The island is fantastic from late May through to late September. The peak summer months of July and August are so much fun – the weather can be quite hot but manageable, and you’re never too far from the sea or a pool to cool off! The island is thriving and there’s such a good buzz about the place.
June and September are just wonderful times to go if you’re able to travel outside the main school holidays – in June there’s an amazing feeling of anticipation on the island as the season is getting in to full swing, and in September the island is quieter as most of the main summer guests have left, but the sea is perfectly warm and the weather a little more mild but in the best of ways.
