Korcula is one of Dalmatia’s best kept secrets. It’s home to some of the country's finest olive groves and vineyards, and there is so much to see and explore, from its fascinating history to its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters and dramatic scenery. The real beauty with this island is that it feels much more ‘off the beaten track’ than its more popular neighbouring holiday destinations such as Hvar and Dubrovnik.

There’s a real feel of the Mediterranean here, with its exceptional coastline, plethora of hidden beaches, and laidback, authentic vibe.

Korcula Town itself is a must-see – often dubbed ‘Mini Dubrovnik’ with its Venetian-influenced medieval walls, cobbled streets and terracotta rooftops. The town’s inventive ‘fishbone’ formation of buildings was designed to protect its inhabitants from the strong sea winds and sun. There are many wonderful restaurants and bars to try here – chose a table on the main promenade for the best views of the Peljesac peninsula behind the glistening Adriatic Sea.

Similar to the Mediterranean, food is an integral part of Croatian family life. Staples include grilled meats and catch of the day cooked over glowing coals, an array of homegrown salads and vegetable dishes all washed down with a glass of the island’s very own Grk or Posip white wine. Wonderfully fresh seafood is very much a staple for this island, with the fish coming straight off the boats from the morning’s catch. You can find everything from local ‘konobas’ (tavernas) serving traditional, Peka grills and flavourful, family food to Michelin-starred restaurants showcasing the very best of the island’s finest, seasonal produce.

There are several award-winning wineries on the island that are well worth a visit. Sample some of the country’s rarest and most delectable wines in Lumbarda, a small fishing village on the east of the island. A few of the wineries have on-site, family run restaurants where you can enjoy a flight of wine perfectly paired with the culinary delights on offer.

We would always recommend exploring the island from the sea – hire a boat and let your skipper take you to the best spots for a swim so you can cool off with a dip in the turquoise waters. If you’re feeling more adventurous, why not try your hand at some of the water sports on offer such as jet skiing, windsurfing, paddleboarding and sailing. After an action-packed morning on the sea, slow the pace down after lunch with a slow amble through the cobbled streets of the old town, browsing the array of little boutiques, delis, and cafes as you go.

Korcula Town has some excellent, understated cocktail and wine bars, perfect for an evening digestif before heading back to the villa. There are also several beach-front bars dotted along the coastline in both directions away from Korcula Town, which are great for teenagers (and adults too!) wanting to continue the fun into the early hours with more lively crowds and great music.

The main season in Korcula is from May until September. The weather is warm and on the whole reliable, with temperatures hottest in July and August. The sea is the perfect temperature to refresh after the warmth of the sun, and in the main summer months there’s such a great buzz and atmosphere in the town squares and konobas.

May, June and September can be equally lovely – be prepared in early May and late September for the weather to be a little unsettled, but by June its lovely and warm - quieter with tourists but perfect for exploring without the masses. That being said, it's never hugely busy on the island. September always has the benefit of the water being the perfect temperature after a summer spent under the sun – it's one of our favourite times to visit.
